video-marketing

A few weeks ago, Borrell Associates,  Local Media Association and Local Search Association hosted the “Fast Forward Video Summit” in Chicago. Two days of learning how to harness and leverage the power of video—specifically tailored to the local business marketplace! I wasn’t able to attend, but friends that attended were kind enough to share the insights with me, from Mark McMaster, who runs Google/YouTube’s Global Brand Activation unit.

These observations should resonate with any local business looking to advance their visibility online, with video being a major component!

  1. Real estate, automotive, food & dining, home repair, health & wellness and sports & leisure are the top categories on YouTube. Not far behind these are service businesses, professional businesses and retailers.
  2. There are millions of “how-to” videos on YouTube – this represents a tremendous opportunity for local business owners. Think: “episodic TV.”
  3. 45% of males 18-34 will visit YouTube TODAY (more than watched the Super Bowl).
  4. 18-34 year olds watch an average of 142 videos per month on YouTube.
  5. These 18-34 year olds spend 9.8 hours per month on YouTube.
  6. And their average watch time is 4.1 minutes.
  7. We are in the participation age – users are driving content!
  8. YouTube can offer precise targeting – for example, people looking to buy a car.
  9. Business owners must think like a content creator when creating video. But this is often outside of their comfort level. Local media companies can help them in a big way.
  10. Call First Impressions Video to discuss all your current and future video production needs! (Yes, this one is mine!)

Millenials!

As a Baby Boomer, I can’t act surprised by the news: Millenials will outspend Boomers in 2017! Our days as the drivers of the economy are dwindling! But if you offer a product or service, don’t despair! By taking proper steps, you can be embraced by this up and coming generation who will have major dollars to spend! Among the steps that must be taken, including video in your marketing is a “must do.”

Google recently published a consumer survey which included two infographics that make this point crystal clear! If you want to attract Millenials, you will need video to do it!

Attention Business Owners: Defeat the barriers to video adoption!

Three Barriers

Regardless what business you’re in, it’s probable that your customers are viewing online video content, at higher rates than ever before. MarketingProfs, a respected reference source on internet marketing published a great article, with an accompanying infographic, that has only become more significant in the two years since it was first published. According to Cisco Systems, they expect the number of people watching online video worldwide to hit 1.5 billion by 2016!

see-and-hearVideos are a great way to convey a lot of information efficiently, and research validates that video can hold attention longer than audio or text alone. That said, businesses of all sizes are still struggling with how to use video effectively, and, especially for smaller companies with limited resources, this can seem like an overwhelming task.

The barriers to broader adoption of video by small-to-medium-size businesses (SMBs) can be broken down into the following categories:

Resources – A small business is not always equipped with an articulate spokesperson willing to step in front of a camera. And while big companies have ‘evangelists’ who routinely do this, with an SMB,  this more often falls to a product manager,  marketing VP, or the business owner him/her-self, all of whom usually have “full plates” of other tasks. In addition, SMBs often lack personnel that can aid in the technical aspects of video production.

Technology – SMBs likely don’t have the necessary technical equipment, including high-quality cameras, microphones and good lighting, which contribute to a well-produced video. Many also lack the marketing savvy to effectively distribute that video content. And if you can’t get your content out, what’s the point?

Cost – SMBs continually wrestle with limited resources and often can’t afford to hire a professional to produce video content. Time is also not necessarily an SMB’s friend; they are “time challenged” and often forced to direct energy and resources on other high-impact priorities—like the day-to-day operation of the business.

Fortunately for SMBs, integrating high-quality video content into marketing initiatives doesn’t have to be beyond reach. Several short form videos can go a long way to inform interested parties about your business and what sets you apart from your competition. These could include:

  • An “about us” video to replace or enhance the written content on your website.
  • “Explainer” videos to explain processes unique to your business
  • Presentation of the company mission and/or vision
  • Webinars to convey timely information

And as I’ve said in other blog posts and my short promo, none of these projects have to ‘break the bank!’

SMBs can further leverage their investment in video content by chopping it into “digestible” segments and repurposing it on multiple locations. Think of “episodic TV” and you’ll get the idea!

Audience demand for video is growing rapidly, and the businesses that can respond will win and win big!

another barrier

Update on Drones

PhantomWithCamera

Earlier this year I wrote an article about drones and my growing concerns about their misuse. I was particularly bothered a few weeks ago at the emergence of a video clip showing a drone mounted with a handgun, actually firing rounds while in flight. I don’t care WHAT kind of ‘experiment’ this may have been, why do we have to show every idiot out there that this can be done?!?   Which is, by the way, why I won’t show a picture–much less the video–of this knuckleheaded behavior.

This past week, USA Today published an article that hints at potential trouble brewing for the ‘drone economy.’ If I were the CEO of DJI, maker of the wildly popular Phantom series of drones (China-based, by the way!) or any other manufacturer, I would get out in front of this before it flies out of control! Pun intended!

Attention Travel, Meeting, Incentive, Event and Conference Planners: You need video!

FLV-14And (with all due respect) I’m not talking about the A/V guys (and ladies) in the back of the main ballroom, providing IMAG and audio support for your keynote presentations and general sessions. I’m talking about the guy free-roaming the entire conference, chronicling everything! Sometimes, it’s a post-event video that can be delivered by DVD, flash drive or hosted on sites like Vimeo and YouTube, or a final night video presented to bring the event to a close—or both…that’s what I do!

I recently attended a regional meeting of travel industry professionals and met a few folks from destination management companies. When I explained what I do, I often received a puzzled look, followed with the statement, “we would never use a service like that.” SERIOUSLY?!?! I was in the travel business for over 20 years and remember countless occasions where video pros were floating around events doing exactly what I described in the previous paragraph. And the equipment used today to capture such events is far superior (and a lot more portable) compared to the VHS and Beta equipment being used back then!TFE3

So think about it! I would just bet you’ve got some kind of event on the horizon that would be benefit greatly by the use of video. Think of it as the “Diary of our [insert event here]”! I am free to travel and my passport is current, for “destination” events. And if you want to get a few tips on effective event video, click here and check out an earlier post on the subject.

One more thought: If you’re involved in a non-profit, you’re always looking for ways to increase and retain volunteers, and enhance your fund-raising activities. Using video to showcase your endeavors can be a compelling way to maximize all of these efforts!
